It is true you can use any backpack you may have lying around, however after a few years of carrying equipment around, I have got to appreciate the difference between a well designed and made bag and a cheap imitation.
The key points to get across are that the bag needs to protect your equipment and protect you especially when carrying heavy kit around.
I use 5.11 Tactical Rush 12 and 5.11 Tactical Rush 24 also a Maxpedition Gearslinger.
