#HamRadio Live! 381. How The S Meter Works. Plus An External Tuner + Radios Tuner To Get More Power

Thank you to Greg, KA9WPG, For the request of this show. At 35:29 I get into the segment about the “S Meter.”

At 56:45 I talk about where you use “Pre Amps” and why you use them.

Sorry about having the preamplifiers on so I really couldn’t show you the natural QRM on lower frequencies versus the upper ones.

After watching this I was literally screaming at my phone that I didn’t do it right!!

Try it yourself.

Make sure that your preamplifiers are off, start at 80m, then go up in meter bands and you’ll find that the noise goes to basically zero as you climb. This is why radio manufacturers tell you to use preamplifiers on higher frequencies.

This is where preamplifiers help tremendously.

At 1:12:35 I talk about using an external auto tuner, THEN using the onboard tuner on the transceiver to get a little more power out of the transmitter on the transceiver. It’s like “fine tuning” the radio to give you a little more extra power out to the antenna.

Thanks to Kevin, K0KLB, in Iowa For the wonderfully produce video of our QSO yesterday. Kevin’s remarkable YouTube channel can be found here: https://youtube.com/channel/UC2oVDAh73wg3UCMB3taMv6A

I hope you enjoy the show. Sorry it’s a bit long.
