I have not done a POTA activation for two months and felt it was time to get out and do one.

I knew I could do a 2fer from K-5950 This is the Place Heritage Park with K-4578 Pony Express National Historic Trail. The National Pony Express Monument is located at the park. The trail runs through where the monument is located. There is a parking lot west of the monument by the Mormon Battalion Monument and the trail runs through it. This is where I parked my car and did my activation.

I only operated on 20 meters and used my Yaesu FT-857D running at 90 watts and my MFJ-1979 17ft Telescoping Antenna. I operated for one hour and 10 minutes. As usual got good signal reports when the band was up. The band was up and down for the day and there was some qsb. I had a great opening to the Northwest with Washington, Idaho and British Columbia. Also California stations were booming in.

This is the Place Heritage Park shows the events and history of the Mormon Pioneer crossing the plains and arriving in the Salt Lake valley. The park has several actual and replica buildings of homes and business in Utah. They have created a town from the buildings and it is interesting to read about each building. They have a leather shop with people working on leather projects.

On the first weekend of December they have a Christmas Market, which is really popular, and that is why there is a Christmas Tree by the visitor center.

There is a large This is the Place monument telling about all the various parties who discovered and traveled through the Salt Valley and the Mormon Pioneers.

If you like history it is a great place to visit to learn about the western migration and settling of the Salt Lake valley. The California Trail also goes through This is the Place Heritage Park and goes north but you can’t drive to where the trail is located.
